Preventive medicine is a proactive approach to health care that includes health screenings, lab tests, physical exams and other techniques aimed at helping physicians prevent diseases from developing or progressing. Preventive care uses a variety of health screening methods to look for an array of serious medical issues in their earliest stages, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, and it also looks for risk factors that could make you more prone to developing those diseases in the future. Based on the information from those exams and assessments, an individualized plan of care can be created that addresses each patient's unique health risks to help them avoid serious diseases and other medical issues while promoting better overall health.
During your appointment, a thorough medical history will be taken to provide information about risk factors that could make you more prone to certain diseases. In addition, other factors like age, weight, and existing medical issues or symptoms will be considered, and a physical exam will be performed. Based on that data, the appropriate screenings can be recommended. Many lab tests and screenings can be performed right in the office, including cardiovascular testing, bone density testing, metabolic testing and pulmonary (lung) function testing.
Ideally, you should have an annual physical exam to ensure you receive the most appropriate tests based on your health needs as they evolve over time. Depending on your age and other factors, your screening needs can change from year to year. Having an annual physical is the best way to ensure risk factors are “caught” early so you can be screened and preventive care can be initiated as soon as possible.
